The remote nation of Mongolia slotted in-between China and Russia boasts massive deposits of copper, iron, zinc, uranium and various other valuable natural resources such as gold in its most desolate territories. For a nation that has suffered both politically and economically for decades, fortunately Mongolia is going through a mining boom and the future is looking very bright.
Mining companies from across the world are lining up to do business and it is expected that Mongolia will see a surge of investment over the next few years. But there may be hurdles on the path to success, as a young democracy, Mongolia still remains very vulnerable to corruption and mismanagement. With such a mining frenzy sweeping the whole nation, the government must ensure all the wealth is distributed down to every possible sector of the country.
On September 15, the Mongolian government endorsed a 600MW coal-fired Chandgana Power Plant Project. Even though it is very difficult and challenging for a country with such a large land mass and a small scattered population, it seems the government is taking vital steps to ensure that the poor living outside the capital are benefited from such a resource boom.
